Over the summer Officer Cadets from Birmingham University Officer Training Corps (BUOTC) deployed to the Magilligan Training Centre in Northern Ireland, for a jam packed schedule of adventure training.

Splitting the training into three phases allowed the Officer Cadets to experience a broad range of activities and skills, with some also taking part in a leadership cadre to become a Junior Under Officer.

Over the course of five days they honed their shootings skills on the range, using both SA80A2 and GPMG weapons.

A three-day patrol exercise gave their Officer Cadets the chance to develop their patrols, section attacks, orders, harbour areas, map reading and CRBN training. Due to the nature of BUOTC, there was a heavy focus on leadership development, especially by the year 3 Officer Cadets prior to them coming to the end of their time at the OTC.

In true student spirit – no activity would be complete without an important social element.  Two days of cultural visits rounded off their deployment to see the beauty and history of Northern Ireland, visiting The Giants Causeway, the Titanic Museum, Crumlin Gaol and Portrush.

Birmingham University Officer Training Corps offers more to your university life than just a degree.  Officer Cadets take part in adventure training, build leadership and confidence, make lifelong friends and can experience military life without further commitment – whilst getting paid for training.
