Employees from across the West Midlands stepped away from their day-to-day roles to experience leadership training delivered the Army way through the Exercise Executive Leader and Exercise Future Leader programmes.

Leadership Training the Army Way

Designed to challenge, inspire and develop professionals at different stages of their careers, both events combined leadership theory with practical team-based exercises, giving participants the opportunity to test themselves in unfamiliar environments while developing valuable workplace skills.

Exercise Executive Leader was aimed at team leaders and junior managers looking to progress into senior management positions, while Exercise Future Leader focused on individuals preparing to take their next step into leadership roles for the first time.

The programmes were created to build strong engagement with targeted employers through stimulating leadership training that reflects the British Army’s proven approach to leadership development. By combining practical activities with discussion-led learning, the events demonstrated how Army leadership principles can be directly applied within civilian organisations and workplaces.

Participants began the experience by exploring leadership theory, including the qualities, values and behaviours expected of effective leaders. Group discussions encouraged individuals to reflect on their own leadership styles, while guest speakers shared personal experiences and insights gained through leadership in challenging situations.

Strengthening Teams through Shared Challenges

Throughout the events, attendees took part in a variety of tasks designed to test communication, problem-solving, resilience and teamwork. Activities ranged from mental challenges requiring strategic thinking to physical exercises that pushed participants outside of their comfort zones. The emphasis throughout was on collaboration, trust and adapting under pressure.

Individuals from a wide range of organisations and sectors worked together, building connections and learning from one another while tackling demanding but enjoyable activities.

Despite a slight spell of rain during Exercise Executive Leader, participants remained fully engaged and committed throughout the day. Their enthusiasm and determination highlighted the positive impact the programme had on everyone involved.
